FiberConNext: Our History and Growth
FiberConNext has grown from humble beginnings in 1996 as a small local computer repair store called New Age Computing. In 2002, new owner Richie Torbett renamed the company Networking and Computers (NAC) and began focusing on small business and local government network and computer support. The name changed again in 2008 to Networking and Computer Connection (NACC) with the purchase of Computer Connection.
In 2009, NACC created a structured cabling department to better serve customer needs and hired Alan Newton (Registered Communications Distribution Designer – RCDD) as the first full-time network cabling employee. By 2014, the cabling department had grown to 9 full-time employees with over 130 years of combined experience. To continue this rapid growth in designing and installing structured low-voltage networks, the cabling department was separated from NACC and FiberConNext was born. The NACC name and computer support department were sold to Saratoga Technologies, allowing FiberConNext to concentrate all efforts on the “Next Generation of Structured Cabling.”
Establishing Our Operational Base
The same year FiberConNext was founded, 2014, we took over the warehouse at 109 E. King St in downtown Johnson City. Located directly behind our main office, this warehouse became a critical operational asset, allowing us to store over 20 service vehicles and maintain a large inventory, including thousands of feet of copper and fiber cables, ensuring we can respond quickly to client needs.
Our commitment to professionalism and quality led to a significant expansion of our capabilities in 2020 when we obtained our Tennessee and North Carolina Unlimited Electrical Contractor licenses. We further expanded our service offerings in 2023 by securing our North Carolina and Virginia Security Licenses, enabling us to provide state-of-the-art security solutions across the region.
The Knoxville Expansion
Our success in the Tri-Cities region propelled a major regional expansion. In 2022, we opened a branch office in Knoxville, TN. The following year, 2023, saw the team settle into their first Knoxville location at 8537 Asheville Hwy.
2023 was also a year of major recognition, as FiberConNext was honored by the University of Tennessee as a prestigious Rocky Top Business Award winner. These awards celebrate the 40 fastest-growing companies headed by a University of Tennessee Graduate.
The rapid growth in Knoxville continued. By August of 2024, the branch had outgrown its first office and relocated to a significantly larger facility at 2212 N. Central Street. This new, expanded location included more warehouse space and a dedicated garage for shop vehicles. This period of sustained expansion has been a testament to the dedication of the FiberConNext team, which has grown to 22 employees by 2025, carrying forward the mission of delivering the “Next Generation of Structured Cabling.”
